The Surgical Procedure

Rhinoplasty can change the shape and size of the nose to achieve a greater proportion between the nose and the face. Some of the changes that a nose job procedure can achieve include:

  • Reduce or increase width or height of the nose
  • Remove undesirable flaws such as bumps on the nasal bridge
  • Smoothen bulbous tips and straighten drooping tips
  • Straighten crooked nose

Nose Job Procedure: The 6 Steps

Typically, it takes 1 to 3 hours to complete a rhinoplasty procedure. Below are the steps of how a nose job procedure is accomplished.

  1. Anesthesia
Local or general anesthesia is administered to provide you the utmost comfort and painless time during the nose job procedure. The choice of anesthetics, primarily, is determined by patient’s health and preference. With local anesthesia, only the nose and the surrounding area will be sedated. The patient will be awake during the nose job procedure, but won’t feel any pain. With general anesthesia, you will be unconscious during the surgery.
  2. Incision
Incisions are either done inside of the nose (in closed rhinoplasty procedure) or across the columella base(in open rhinoplasty procedure). The incision is done to separate the skin of the nose from its bone and cartilage support. Closed incision allows faster healing of wounds and leaves no external scarring. Open rhinoplasty is the preferred technique in more complicated noses because it allows surgeons to see a greater visibility of the nose.
  3. Reshaping nasal structure
The internal structure of the nose is then reconstructed to the desired shape. Reshaping of the nose is achieved by removing cartilage, tissue, or skin. Sometimes the procedure requires an addition to the structure. If so, cartilage from other areas of the body particularly the ear, septum, and the ribs are grafted and added as needed to achieve the desired nose shape.
  4. Correcting a deviated septum
Septum is the wall that divides air passages. If the tissue separating the nostrils is deviated, this is aligned to correct breathing impairment.
  5. Closing the incision
After the nose has been sculpted to the desired shape, the skin is draped over the new structure. In
  6. Applying protective support
Soft nasal splints or internal tubes are then inserted to the nose support the new structure. External splint or bandages are also applied to protect the nose while healing. The patient may have to wear these protective splints for a week or so. You will be experiencing a lot of bruising, swelling and other bodily discomforts. Following the post-surgical care instructions of your surgeon to the bone will help you recover faster.
