Common Questions
Rhinoplasty or nose job is a surgical procedure aimed at re-contouring one’s nose to make it more visually appealing. Below are some common nose job questions.
What is the “perfect nose?”
There is no one standard design or shape for “perfect nose,” but what rhinoplasty can do is re-structure your nose to make its contours and size in harmonious proportion with other features of your face.
Will the surgery be covered by my insurance?
This depends on whether you are seeking rhinoplasty for medical purposes or for aesthetic purposes only. If the rhinoplasty is done to correct birth defects or obstructed nasal airways, the procedure will likely be covered by policies. In most cases, rhinoplasty for pure cosmetic purposes is not covered by insurance.
Will rhinoplasty hurt?
Before the actual reconstructive surgery is carried out, anesthesia will be injected into your nose so you won’t feel any pain. After the surgery though, you might experience soreness of nose for a week or so.
How long is the recovery period after rhinoplasty?
After the surgery, your nose will feel sore and there will be swelling and bruising around the nasal and eye area and this happens on the first week. During that week, you need to wear a protective cast or splint. You will be wearing bandages also for five days after the surgery so patients are basically encouraged to take 5 days to a week off from school or work.
The nose may still be swollen after the cast is removed, and continue to be so for two weeks. After which, the bruising and swelling may no longer be obvious to other observers though it may continue to look swollen to the rhinoplasty patient for 3 to 4 months.
Can I exercise after the surgery?
Exercise and other strenuous activities are extremely discouraged for two weeks at the least after the surgery.
Can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?
Patients are advised to not wear glasses for a period of 6 to 8 weeks. The reason for this is that eyeglasses can exert pressure on the nose that will affect the repositioning of the bone and may also leave irremediable indentations on the nasal bridge.
How much does a nose job cost?
This varies greatly and depends on several factors that typically includes location, your surgeon’s level of experience, and extent of surgery. All in all, though, the cost of rhinoplasty covers surgical fee, anesthesia fee, and facility fee.
Does rhinoplasty have side effects?
Rhinoplasty, like other invasive surgeries, carry potential risks and complications. Many of these risks, however, are minor. Patient has to expect a lot of swelling and bruising after the surgery, for instance. Serious risks such as permanent nerve damage and impairment of nasal breathing are rarely heard of, but it is still important to consider these risks before pursuing the surgery.
Is rhinoplasty right for me?
If you have breathing and other nasal-related medical problems as a result of nasal birth defect or accident, rhinoplasty can correct them. If you are seeking rhinoplasty for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons, it is important to evaluate your motivations for considering a nose job. For instance, if you are suffering from a low self-esteem because of your perceived facial flaw, a good nose job can help boost your self-confidence and is certainly going to be worth the cost.
